USA, 2011, 101 min., English, Director: Jon Shenk

Introduced by Erik Assadourian, Transforming Cultures Project Director, Worldwatch Institute.

Filmed at the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, the documentary follows former President Mohamed Nasheed on his quest to lobby for higher climate regulations for developed nations and newly industrializing countries. The Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world, are endangered like no other country by the melting ice at the poles and the resulting rise of the sea levels.

The Island President won the Cadillac People's Choice Documentary Award at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, and the Sustainability Award of the Sundance Institute in the feature category.

Jon Shenk has produced a number of documentaries for, among others, PBS, the BBC, A&E, and National Geographic Television, and has been nominated twice for an Emmy for his cinematography.
